Does God Know How We Feel?

Have you ever wondered if God truly understands your pain, grief, fear, or heartbreak?

The answer is yes. And one of the greatest examples of that is found in the shortest verse in the Bible:

“Jesus wept.” — John 11:35

Many times at Christian school graduations, students will jokingly pick “Jesus wept” as their favorite Bible verse because it is the shortest verse in Scripture. But the truth is, that tiny verse may carry one of the biggest messages in the entire Bible.

Jesus healed three different people during His ministry that had already died. He raised the widow’s son in Luke 7:11–17, Jairus’ daughter in Matthew 9:18–26, and His friend Lazarus in John 11:1–44. Each miracle showed His power over death itself. But the story of Lazarus stands out to me in a very personal way.

The Bible says Jesus already knew Lazarus was going to die. He even delayed going to see him. By the time Jesus arrived, Lazarus had already been dead for four days and placed in a tomb. Mary and Martha, Lazarus’ sisters, were devastated. When they saw Jesus, they both said something very similar:

“Lord, if You had been here, my brother would not have died.”

Jesus already knew what He was about to do. He knew Lazarus was about to walk out of that grave alive and healthy. He knew death was not going to win. He knew the mourning was temporary.

Yet… Jesus still wept.

Why?

Because when Jesus saw Mary and Martha hurting, He felt their pain. He felt their sorrow, anxiety, and heartbreak. Even though He knew the outcome, He still cared deeply about what they were experiencing in that moment.

That is one of the most powerful truths in Christianity to me. God is not distant from our suffering. Jesus did not walk through life cold and emotionless. He loved people. He cared about people. He cried with people.

Sometimes we wonder why God allows hard moments in our lives when He already knows the future. We may not always understand His timing, just like Mary and Martha did not understand His timing. But the story of Lazarus reminds us that even when God is working behind the scenes, He still sees our tears.

Jesus then walked to the tomb and called out:

“Lazarus, come forth.”

And Lazarus walked out of the grave alive.

The same Jesus who had the power to raise the dead still stopped long enough to cry with the hurting. That tells me something very important: God absolutely knows how we feel.

No matter what you are facing today — grief, stress, fear, loneliness, financial pressure, sickness, or uncertainty — God is not disconnected from your emotions. He sees you. He understands you. And He cares more deeply than we can imagine.

Sometimes people think Christianity means pretending we are never hurt or afraid. But even Jesus Himself showed emotion. He showed compassion. He showed tears.

And because of that, I truly believe we serve a God who understands the human heart completely.

If you are going through something difficult today, remember this: the same Savior who called Lazarus out of the grave is the same Savior who understands every tear you cry.
